About the service

Laser scanning and point cloud – what are these?

Laser scanning is the simplest and cheapest way of collecting precise 3D spatial data.  When an object is surveyed in this manner, a three-dimensional pool of spatial data, or a point cloud, is obtained with millimetre precision. We conduct such surveying with the most advanced 3D laser scanner, the Leica RTC360.

Enefit point cloud

Who needs this service and why?

You can view a point cloud on an ordinary computer with the free Leica Jetstream Viewer software, thus easily accessing all the necessary details about the building or other physical object. This software allows the user to extract precise dimensions from the point cloud and see a high-resolution panoramic photo of the surveyed points. Point clouds can be imported into all popular project design software (such as  ArchiCAD, Autodesk Revit, Tekla, etc.).

Architect and designer

When renovating a building, it is important to collect precise spatial data in 3D as soon as possible, enabling the creation of a better-quality construction information model and ensuring that no unexpected problems occur in the course of the renovation.

Real estate owner and manager

After completion of the construction work, the building will be typically used for 50–100 years, and during all this time the users must know where all the pipes, communications and structural elements are situated behind the decor. The best solution is to record their locations during the construction process via laser scanning.

Professional builder

The builder must prepare covered work documents and as-built drawings. The fastest, most precise and most informative way of recording covered work at a construction site is to perform laser scanning. The builder that has a point cloud for covered work will avoid many subsequent misunderstandings and disputes with the customer.

Owner’s supervisor

The owner must make sure that the construction work is conducted in accordance with the construction project and its quality complies with the requirements. A precise, high-quality point cloud of covered work facilitates reviewing of the results without the need to visit the site. As a bonus, the building owner and manager get detailed information of the work done for future reference.

Independent builder or private owner

If you do building work yourself or hire an individual builder, you should perform quick laser scanning of the heating pipes or cables being installed under the floor and the electrical wires in the walls. Then you will know where you can drill holes later in a safe manner, without damaging any pipes or cables in the walls and floor.

Heritage documenter

Laser scanning creates exact images of whole historically valuable buildings, intricate façades and other distinct parts of buildings for which no technical drawings have been retained. So, if a such a building collapses or is demolished, it can be restored partially or in full precisely as it looked before.

 RESULT

What do I get and how can I use it?

The surveying result for the customer is a point cloud file that can be viewed on any personal computer with the Leica Jetstream Viewer software. With the aid of this software, you can extract measurements from otherwise inaccessible spots and take a comprehensive tour around the digital twin of the object.  You can also import a point cloud to popular project design software (ArchiCAD, Revit, Tekla, etc.) as a basis for further project work. We can transform a point cloud into 2D drawings, cross-sections, views and 3D models. We can also perform point cloud cleanup, processing and adjustment to a system of coordinates.
